Have you heard the news about a Riverside woman who was convicted in the hit-and-run death of a 49-year old bicyclist in Newport Beach?  She was driving on Jamboree Road when she hit him and his bike from behind.  She then fled the scene, dragging his bike under her vehicle – stopping about a mile away.  It was determined that she was under the influence of prescription drugs at the time.

The victim died a day later from severe head and neck injuries.

The 38-year old woman pleaded guilty to one felony count of hit-and-run with permanent death or injury, one felony count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence, and one misdemeanor count of driving without a valid license with a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury.  The sentence will most probably be three years in a California prison.

The Press Enterprise recently reported that a Hemet police officer, age 30, was involved in a hit-and-run accident where he suffered severe injuries.  Officers believe the accident was caused by a female drunk driver in a Honda Accord.  Witnesses said that the other driver ran a red light, causing the police officer and himself to crash into a third vehicle already at the light.

After the collision, the female fled on foot, leaving the officer trapped inside the police car.  He was later taken to a nearby hospital where he was in serious condition.  The 32-year old woman, was later arrested on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries.  She violated several California laws by driving under the influence, driving through a red light and then leaving the scene of an accident.

I hope the officer recovers soon.  I urge him to consult with an experienced Personal Injury Attorney to make sure his rights are protected.
