A 48-year old Cathedral City man pleaded guilty to starting a fire that damaged eight businesses and left more than 100 people out of work; he was sentenced to six years in prison and then five years on parole.

The man was held in jail in lieu of $1.25 million bail since his arrest last December after admitting he started the fire to commit insurance fraud.  The judge in Riverside County Superior Court dismissed a felony burglary charge in exchange for the guilty plea. In addition, he is required to pay $1.5 million in restitution to the owner of the damaged building.

A 6-year old Hemet boy was severely burned after falling into a broken-down fire pit at a local beach.  The young boy was running down the beach while flying a kite.  He fell into an unattended fire pit that had a small, smoldering fire lit.

He was taken to UCI’s Regional Burn Center in Orange when he suffered second- and third-degree burns on his right arm and right side of his chest after trying to push himself out of the pit.

His parents are questioning whether the city and state properly maintain the fire pits on local beaches.  There have been several incidents of this nature in recent years, including two pending lawsuits.  Apparently the beach has no signs telling the best way to extinguish a fire.

If you or a family member is injured because of a fire pit on a beach or at a park, contact an experienced Palm Desert Personal Injury attorney to determine if you are entitled to compensation for your injuries and expenses.

A 37-year old big-rig driver drifted off the freeway when he lost control and crashed into one of two parked cars on the shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore recently.  The big-rig overturned and caught fire, trapping the driver inside – leaving the driver dead.

The two cars were stopped because one of them had blown a tire and the other stopped to help his friend.  The 22-year old who stopped to help his friend sustained major injuries while the 22-year old with the blown tire was uninjured.
