Did you hear the news about a former priest who pleaded guilty to possessing illegal drugs for sale?  He originally pleaded not guilty to four felony charges and one misdemeanor charge related to drug possession and receiving stolen property.

The 51-year old priest, was arrested for selling methamphetamines and G.H.B., the so-called date rape drug.  the priest was defrocked by the Catholic Church 14 years ago.  Riverside County Sheriff’s detectives said they could link him to several sexual assaults that took place in his church near Corona.  A young man has come forward who alleges the priest assaulted him and others.

The priest faces more than 4 years in California state prison.

The State of California has a new system of penalties for hospitals that put their patients at risk of serious injuries or death.  Southwest Healthcare System in Murietta is the first to receive a $100,000 fine.

It has been determined that Rancho Springs Medical Center doctors used electrical cauterizing instruments when they performed caesarean sections on three women.  The delivery rooms had low humidity, which creates conditions that could have started a fire.

If you or someone you know is placed in a dangerous situation, I urge you to contact an experienced Personal Injury Attorney who will know how to investigate your claim and make sure you are compensated for the wrongdoing of another.

Have you ever noticed that most people do not want to talk about death, especially if they are young and healthy?  Of course, some older folks do not want to talk about it either.  By not discussing the inevitable, many people do not take the time to draw up legal documents pertaining to their financial affairs and their care if something happens to them.  Statistics show that only 20-30 percent of individuals have filled out these forms.

An experienced Estate Planning Attorney can discuss your options with you.  Examples include a living will – details your care if you become incapacitated.  A health care proxy will name a person who can make decisions for you.

With a living will, you will still be in charge at the end.

The City of Rancho Mirage is cracking down on people who falsify applications for permits and licenses.  Anyone who lies on a city application faces punishment.  The new city ordinance allows revocation of anything obtained through a false application; misdemeanor charges will be filed against the applicant.  Misdemeanor fines can range up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail.

This new ordinance is rare in the Coachella Valley.  I would advise anyone applying for a city application to double-check their information and make sure it is 100% accurate.

For those of you stuck in late afternoon traffic between Laurel Avenue and 11th Street the other day and not knowing why, let me tell you.  Two people riding a motorcycle on Interstate 10 in Beaumont were injured because of debris in the road.  The debris fell from a trailer.

The two individuals were taken to a local hospital where their condition is unknown.  I hope they consult an experienced Personal Injury attorney who will investigate, find the trailer that lost the debris and make sure these individuals get compensated for their medical expenses.

Lake Elsinore recently set up a drunken driving safety checkpoint at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue.  Over fourteen hundred vehicles passed through it, 27 motorists were issued citations for vehicle code violations, 19 cars were impounded because the drivers did not have a valid license, and three men were arrested for drunken driving.

Over the past couple of years, nine people were killed and 13 injured in accidents involving drunken drivers in the Lake Elsinore area.

According to the Palm Spring Police Department, a man in his late 70’s riding a bike was recently struck by a Super Shuttle airport van.  In the process of trying to avoid hitting the man, the van was hit by an automobile.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for serious head injuries.  No one else was injured.

My best wishes go out for this man and hope he has a speedy recovery.

The other day, in the middle of the afternoon, in the middle of a busy intersection, a 17-year old boy was hit by an automobile while cycling through the intersection.  The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating what happened.

I hope that the boy will be okay but if something serious turns up, it would be wise for him and his family to seek the advice of an experienced local Personal Injury attorney who will make sure he receives compensation for his medical expenses.

The Orange County Register reported recently that Riverside prosecutors are investigating a 32-year old man who has been exploiting young girls through Facebook and MySpace for almost two years.

He pretended to be a fake modeling agency and asked them to send sexually explicit pictures of themselves.  He sent them pictures showing the poses he wanted them to use.  Dozens of young girls from about 16 states and 2 countries sent him photos – hoping to become a model.  The youngest girl was age 11.  Many actually met with him.

A classmate of one of these girls told her mother about the agency.  The mother told the potential model’s mother.  The girls admitted that they posed nude at this man’s home; they were 13 and 14.  He took one of the girls to a home in Palm Springs for pictures.  After taking a few pictures, he told the girl his camera broke.  This girl’s mother was on welfare and got upset when her daughter was not paid.  The man then took this young girl into the shower, had sex with her, and paid her $120.

He admitted to “being sick and needing help for his addictionInvestigators confiscated his camera, computers and all types of nudist literature from his home.  He was finally arrested several months ago on 23 counts of kidnapping for the purpose of rape, aggravated sexual assault and lewd acts against children under 14.  Recently, more than 126 counts were filed against him.

He is presently in a Riverside jail.

A study showed that 1 in 4 elderly people would need an end-of-life decision made for them regarding medical care.  The study indicates that those making their wishes known in a living will, which includes the name of the decision maker, usually got the treatment they requested.

At one time, the national debate on President Obama’s health care stated that Medicare could pay doctors to counsel patients about end-of-life issues.  Critics against this policy called it “death panels”.  The proposal was eventually dropped.

The study concluded that living wills and health proxies are “important tools for providing care in keeping with patients’ wishes.”  The living states what kind of medical treatment a person wants or does not want if he or she becomes incapacitated (i.e. breathing machines, feeding tubes, CPR).  A health care proxy names another person to make medical decisions if needed.  Many people have both.  The study can be read in the New England Journal of Medicine in April.
